Emily Thompson:
The Donna Leon, Commissario Guido Brunetti is excellent. They are set in Venice which becomes as much a character as Guido. We follow him through the streets and into the lives of the locals. Guido is passionate about food and takes you to his favourite places and introduces you to local food traditions. All as part of his work day, which is to solve murders and avoid bureaucracy. He is equally passionate about “justice” and is motivated by his need to find sometimes unconventional fair and just solutions. He is a loving family man, with a wife who is a professor of English Literature. We spend an good part of the story with his family and learn about their modern lives and quirky family games. Guido Brunetti reminds me so much of Armand Gamache. Two intelligent, compassionate men who love their families so much.
