I think it’s because it comes so quickly on the heels of Beth’s betrayal and in the heightened moment of the D-Day invasion. Also Beth’s “breakdown” and odd behavior also are fresh in her friends’ minds so they haven’t processed what’s going on.
I think, ultimately, they are truly friends. It’s maybe more from shared experience and respect for each other’s skills and abilities at Bletchley. But they are very different not only in their backgrounds but also in their personalities, right down to not being able to decide on what book to read in their book club. 🙂

I think Osla and Mab were quick to think the worst of Beth because they had just learned that Beth knew about the impending bombing of Coventry and didn’t warn them not to go. They believed Beth could have alerted them (and through them Francis) without breaking her oath of secrecy by simply saying, ” Don’t go, trust me.” And, before that, Beth had begged for information from Osla on the Fleet Air Arm in her concern for Harry. Osla and Mab considered Beth a hypocrite. Their friendship was ruptured until they later bonded to free Beth from Clockwell and unmask the BP traitor.
