I think she definitely did this to add dramatic tension and suspense. There are a lot of questions and mysteries introduced right from the start. First, who is the woman in the sanatorium? What drove the wedge between the three friends? Who is the traitor? Later on, the questions become less plot driven and more character driven. For example, how is Beth’s betrayal resolved? How do all the romance’s resolve?

I think Kate Quinn does an excellent job of adding layers of secrets and questions in the two timelines and then peeling back the secrets as the book goes on. This is done so deftly. It’s pretty tricky to pull it all together but she manages to do so in a way that doesn’t feel overly contrived. I did guess some of the mysteries, so for me there were some predictable elements, but I was still interested in reading how things resolved because I liked the characters.
