I was surprised by Quinn’s use of real-life people, especially Prince Philip in the story. That’s a delicate balance to mix fiction with historical figures, and I think she does an excellent job. I especially liked the passages where Quinn weaved in historical events like the blitzing of London and the bombing of Coventry—it is very dramatic and impacts the characters and the plot in profound ways. Plus, her descriptions convey a real sense of dread and horror and the impact of the war. They really stood out for me. I also thought Quinn’s descriptions of the work that the three women did in different parts of Bletchley Park were very interesting. I enjoyed learning about how the women that worked there were sworn to secrecy, about the codebreaking work that they did, and how important their efforts were for the war effort. The romance elements were also engaging but ultimately less interesting to me than the friendships between Osla, Mab, and Beth.

I learned so much reading this book that I was clueless about. Once again women doing a huge and significant job with little or no acknowledgement of Neil all these years later.

Engaging. Most books about Bletchley are written at a less personal level – the importance of the work, and the stars like Turing but not about the ordinary individuals involved in the project.
