I’d have to say Elizabeth is the most helpful. Elizabeth is so well connected from her spy days that she can call in favours that help solve each of the crimes. She gets Donna on the case, and gets Ian Ventham’s financials. She knows a bone expert (Austin) who can evaluate the bones Bogdan digs up. She’s also got connections in Cyprus when Ron and Ibrahim go over. She’s able to track down one of the men in the photo left at Tony Curran’s murder – Peter Ward the florist. So she’s a big part of pushing the case(s) along. She also seems to orchestrate whenever and whatever clues the Club gives Donna and Chris. And obviously she is able to piece together whodunnit for several of the murders. She doesn’t really seem to have any weaknesses. Not any that I noticed. So I’d say she’s the MVP.
Ibrahim brings a lot of valuable analytical insights to the group. He helps them logically deduct the routes and timeline as to whether Ian Ventham could have carried out the murder of Ian Tony Curran. He also helps with a very detailed (too detailed?) flip chart listing the possible suspects for Ian’s murder. And he’s got the technical know-how to help explain Fitbits, Skype, etc to the group. His weakness seems to be that he can get lost in the details (so not seeing the forest for the trees). Ron is a good counterpoint to him with his impatience and being able to focus Ibrahim.
Ron. I’m not sure he brings much in the way of skills in solving the crimes in this particular book. His son Jason Ritchie is an asset (a bit like Joyce’s daughter Joanna is to them figuring out the finances of Ian Ventham). It’s Jason and his connections to his old pals who provide the Thursday Murder Club a “break” in their investigation. But Ron does seem like a fellow you’d want to have on your team if you need to stand up to bullies and get the community to rally behind a cause.
As for Joyce. Maybe it’s her cakes and goodies? Just kidding. Her quick thinking and observation skills seem to help out a lot. Her experience as a nurse helps right from the start in giving Elizabeth the details on stab wounds. She then helps Elizabeth get in to see Donna at the police station. And her daughter Joanne, is critical in figuring out the financial puzzle. Although that’s not really a strength but a useful contact. So far, I don’t see too many weaknesses in Joyce. Maybe her inexperience in solving crimes and her desire to find a boyfriend? Her affection for Bernard may have clouded her judgment a bit when it came to him.
