Roasting marshmallows at the New Year’s Eve bonfire. I have such wonderful memories of roasting marshmallows, selecting the best stick, creating a point if it didn’t naturally have one, finding the best place in the fire and getting it brown and soft! Not an inspiration to make something new; more an inspiration to revisit fond memories.

“It was midday, and they’d all been invited back to Clara’s for a lunch of pea soup, bread warm from the oven, an assortment of Quebec cheeses, and pie from Sarah’s boulangerie. And hot chocolate, said Clara. . . .Haniya lifted the bowl with trembling hands and took her first sip of hot chocolate. And immediately understood its powers to soothe, if not heal.” Two separate incidents, but both involving hot chocolate. For me, hot chocolate is a real comfort food, definitely soothing anytime. I have found a really good pea soup, imported from Germany by Aldi which I pair with crackers, cheese and dessert.

Coincidentally, I posted about hot chocolate this morning, too. Chilly days invite the creamy, sweet richness of chocolate which warms the body, and comforts the soul. Is there anything more cosy than cradling a cup of hot chocolate with its inviting aroma wafting around your face, as you savour every sip? And what could be a better accompaniment than a warm, buttery croissant. I always think of the Bistro as a provider of every kind of physical and emotional belonging and comfort. ❤️
