The Handmaid’s Tale is Margaret Atwood’s modern classic novel set in a dystopian future in which environmental disasters and declining birth rates have led to a Second American Civil War and the establishment of the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that enforces strict social roles and enslaves the few remaining fertile women.
Originally published in 1985, the book experienced a surge of renewed interest around its 30th anniversary and the release of the popular Hulu television show at the same time. But it was the world’s uncertain political climate that ultimately made Margaret Atwood decide to write the sequel, The Testaments (2019), to which she had notes dating back to the early 1990s. She told CBC in an interview, “Instead of going away from Gilead, we turned around and started coming back towards Gilead.” The Testaments picks up fifteen years after the events in the first novel and follows three women, the two daughters of Offred and Aunt Lydia.
