In the Hackberry Holland series, Hackberry Holland is an attorney and Korean War POW who becomes sheriff of a tiny border town in Texas.
Like other books in James Lee Burke’s Holland family saga (which also includes the Billy Bob Holland series and Holland Family series), the Hackberry books are a mix of genres but they fall more firmly into the crime fiction genre.
House of the Rising Sun is related to the Hackberry Holland series in that it focuses on Hack’s namesake, his grandfather Hackberry Holland. James Lee Burke considers House of the Rising Son to be one of his best novels. He says, “I think my two best novels are Wayfaring Stranger and House of the Rising Sun. I feel very happy about almost everything I’ve written, and I feel this way because I never wrote anything that wasn’t my best effort.”
