Ulf Varg works as a detective at the Sensitive Crimes Department in Malmo, Sweden. He is newly single and lives with his clever dog, Mafrten. The cases Varg investigates are comically bizarre and handled deftly by Alexander McCall Smith. The Detective Varg series is slightly more satirical than some of Alexander McCall Smith’s other mystery series.
Detective Varg first appeared in The Strand Magazine in 2012 before appearing in other short stories and full length novels. The Strange Case of the Moderate Extremists (0.75) is the fourth appearance of Varg and came out in the same year as The Department of Sensitive Crimes (Book 1). The books do not have to be read in order, but you’ll get a fuller understanding of the farcical Swedish detective by doing so.
