David Baldacci is an internationally bestselling American novelist who has primarily written mysteries and thrillers. Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, David began writing as a child after his mother gave him a lined notebook so that he could write his stories. (When he thanked her years later, he learned she had done it to keep him quiet.)
David earned a B.A. in political science from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. Upon graduating, he practiced law for nine years in Washington, D.C.
His first novel, Absolute Power, was published in 1996 and became very successful, later being adapted into a film by Clint Eastwood. Since then, he has written over 50 novels, which have been translated into over 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries, with over 150 million copies sold worldwide.
In addition to writing numerous series and standalone novels, he adapted his novel Wish You Well into a screenplay for a feature film. He was also a consulting producer on the TV series based on his King & Maxwell series. Several other novels of his have been adapted for television. He’s said if he wasn’t a writer he’d want to be a teacher or a federal agent to contribute to society.
David and his wife, Michelle, are devoted philanthropists. They founded the Wish You Well Foundation to combat illiteracy in America, supporting family and adult literacy programs throughout the country. In 2008, the Foundation partnered with Feeding America, and through the joint Feeding Body & Mind program, more than 1 million books have been distributed to families in need. They stated, “The ability to read is the foundation for everyday life. Indeed, virtually none of the major issues we face as a nation today can be successfully overcome until we eradicate illiteracy.”
