Angeline Boulley

Angeline Boulley is an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. She is a storyteller who writes about her Ojibwe community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Her debut novel, Firekeeper’s Daughter became a #1 New York Times bestseller and winner of multiple awards, including the Printz Medal, Morris Award, American Indian Youth Literature Award YA Honor Book, and Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Young Adult Novel. Firekeeper’s Daughter is also a Reese Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine Book Club pick and is being adapted into a Netflix television program by Higher Ground, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company.

Angeline was born and raised in Bahweting (the place of the rapids) in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She graduated from Central Michigan University. Her father is a traditional firekeeper. She writes that he “strikes ceremonial fires at spiritual activities in the tribal community and ensures protocols are followed, while providing cultural teachings through stories told around the fire. He is one of my greatest teachers.” She also credits growing up with strong Anishinaabe Kwewag (Native American women) as shaping her into the woman she is today.

Angeline has worked in Indian education at the tribal, state, and national levels. She also worked as the Director of the Office of Indian Education (OIE) at the U.S. Department of Education. She has also been her tribe’s Education Director/Assistant Executive Director and served on the Board of Regents at Bay Mills Community College.

Angeline currently lives in Southwest Michigan, but she says her home will always be in Bahweting.
