Alan Bradley was born in Canada into a family of storytellers who never stopped talking about the old days ‘back home’ in England – for which he is eternally grateful. With a long career in tv broadcasting and work as a professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Bradley took early retirement to write full-time. The first book of his Flavia de Luce series won a slew of international awards.

The award-winning series came about after Bradley’s wife listened to a CBC Radio interview of Louise Penny, who was discussing the Debut Dagger fiction competition, run by the U.K. Crime Writers’ Association and sponsored by the Orion Publishing Group in the U.K. Entrants need to submit a synopsis of a murder mystery and a first chapter. Bradley’s wife encouraged him to write something new about the “girl on the camp stool”, a minor character in a novel Bradley was working on. He won the competition and a publishing contract. The rest is history, so to speak. Successive novels featuring Flavia, the young girl with a passionate knowledge of poisons, have become New York Times bestsellers, and are published in thirty-nine countries and thirty-six languages.
