Nevada Barr initially pursued a career in theatre having received her BA in speech and drama and her MFA in Acting. She spent 18 years acting on the stage, working in commercials and doing voice-overs for radio. She became interested in the environmental movement and then began working in the National Parks in summers throughout America.

It was while working in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park that Barr created her Anna Pigeon series. Pigeon works for the United States National Park Service and solves mysteries (usually involving murder) in different National parks from book to book. Barr won Agatha and Anthony Awards for best first novel for Track of the Cat and has won numerous other accolades. She currently resides in New Orleans with her husband, four magical cats, and two adorable dogs.
