I, the Jury by Mickey Spillane 1947. This was his debut novel and is the book that Pete is reading in the novel. Mike Hammer is asked to investigate the death of a friend who had saved Hammer during WWII in the Pacific. Mike vows revenge, declaring that the murderer will die the same way as his friend. In the course of the investigation, he meets and falls in love with a doctor and they become engaged. Hammer is given added reason for revenge when the woman his friend had loved is also killed. It was a narcotics ring involving the doctor which his friend was on the verge of exposing. Hammer kills her (the woman to whom he is engaged) in the same way she had killed his friend.
