His Beartown trilogy sprang from his love of hockey. The story is not just about a group of men playing hockey but also about loyalty and self-worth. It explores politics and human weakness as well. He wanted to write a story that shares “all the best parts of sports that I know, all the things that make me love it, and also tell the difficult questions, the things that are really hard to get a grasp on and try to show that it’s complex.”
