How did you feel about Polly? Did your feelings toward her change as the story progressed? Why or why not? Could you relate to Polly? Why or why not?

I think the author did a good job of building her characters. From Polly’s point of view, she’s justified in her actions as one who cares for children with her whole heart. It’s difficult to relate to her and her actions, she’s is clearly unwell. I was hoping her intentions for the hammer were to knock out the banister to the basement to prevent escape, but what she had intended to do was completely horrific. And her intentions to sacrifice herself and Tegan to save Hank, although kind to Hank, were not relatable to me. I could never carry out any of her actions, from The Incident to the end. Although she did redeem herself with Dennis to some extent, I don’t think it’s enough to excuse her previous actions.

Polly was the character I had the most difficulty understanding although she is intgriguing and unpredictable. At some point around The Incident she clearly became untethered from reality and I just grew more worried about everyone around her as the story progressed. Even though she professes to be helping others, she puts her needs above everyone else’s to an unsettling degree. She so desperately wants to be a mother, but her drive to achieve it is scary so it’s difficult to excuse what she does.
