I digress a bit but will get there.
I have spent the past 4 days crafting responses to a development proposal before the ABQ Planning Commission that would significantly harm the Petroglyph National Monument. You may know from a previous post that is an important area for me personally and has great cultural and spiritual significance for Tribal Nations here.
Having said that, following BCF posts and discussion has been a wonderful respite.
So was this concert Friday evening. I have enjoyed brass music ever since I went to a free concert in Baltimore when my older daughter was a pre-schooler. That was a while ago; she is now 42. Canadian Brass are simply amazing.
Thank you to all of our neighbors in Canada!
Go get ’em, Jane! I’d be willing to bet good money that you’re crafting an incredibly persuasive letter. Best of luck and keep us posted. My fingers will stay crossed for you until we hear about the decision on the proposal.
Good luck! Thanks for sharing, Canadian Brass are wonderful!
They are very lucky to have you fighting on their behalf. Here’s hoping all your efforts pay off. Please let us know how this works out.
If I were in a fight, I’d definitely want you on my side, Jane! Hope your letters convince them to keep the Petroglyph National Monument safe.
Thank you, All! The Planning Commission meeting is tomorrow, 12/19/2024. There is a lot of political pressure to get this project approved. It is a fine project, a film studio, somewhere else! It is planned to be about 1/4 mile form the western boundary of the Petroglyph National Monument and would block views from the trails around the volcanoes to the west and northwest, views which are amazing and have cultural and spiritual connections for nearby Tribal Nations. They are views which connect them to their ancestors migration to their current homelands, routes they still take for pilgrimages.
Both the U.S. and the city of ABQ have done much to create public lands but there are always those who see them as an obstacle to development, resource extraction or someone’s profit. If approved, this will almost certainly be appealed. The main appellant on related issues has been a Tribal Nations non-profit.
My neighborhood is surrounded on 3 sides by PETR. Our neighborhood association and a number of individuals have been involved for years in efforts to protect the entire area. The PETR boundary abuts my rear lot line. So, I consider lots of folks my “over the fence” neighbors!
Sending you strong supportive wishes for the meeting tomorrow! And thank you for the introduction to Canadian Brass; I’d never heard of them before, but I listened to the videos posted here and really enjoyed them. From their description, it sounds like they’d be a lot of fun to watch live.
Besides being amazing musicians, they are fun as well. It starts with the 3 piece suits, Christmas themed socks and white athletic shoes. They are also warm and gracious. They encouraged the audience to photograph or take videos as long as they turned off any flash. That was a new one for me.
Hope the meeting goes well for your association!
Hope the meeting goes well tomorrow, Jane! Sounds like an important fight worth showing up for. And thank you for the introduction to Canadian Brass! Sounds like you’ve given many of us here this little musical gift. Very much appreciated!!
