The Lord John Grey series is a spin-off of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. The character first appears in Outlander’s Dragonfly in Amber (Book 2). Diana began writing Lord John independently when she was asked to write a short story. She has since written several other novellas and three novels (thus far) featuring Lord John Grey.
The Lord John Grey novels fall more into the historical mystery genre than the Outlander books because they do not feature time travel. The books are primarily set in 18th-century Europe. Diana writes, “They’re structured more or less as historical mystery, but do (like anything else I write) include the occasional supernatural bit or other off-the-wall elements.”
Readers enjoy the Lord John Grey series for its complex and fascinating protagonist. As a gay man in 18th-century Britain, his experiences and struggles make him a compelling character.
Readers also appreciate the meticulous historical detail that Diana Gabaldon brings to the books and the mystery plots, which provide a lot of suspense and excitement.
Within the context of the wider Outlander universe, the Lord John Grey novels fall chronologically within the period in Outlander’s Voyager (Book 3). Diana Gabaldon writes, “If you’re wondering where to read the Lord John books in conjunction with the larger series—you can read them anytime after Voyager.”
Furthermore, Diana says that the books and novellas “do stand alone, and can be read separately in any order.” However, if you wish to read the books within the chronology of the series, this is the recommended sequence that she advises:
- Lord John and the Hell-fire Club (Book 0.5, included in Lord John and the Hand of Devils)
- Lord John and the Private Matter (Book 1)
- Lord John and the Succubus (Book 1.5, included in Lord John and the Hand of Devils)
- Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade (Book 2)
- Lord John and the Haunted Soldier (Book 2.25, included in Lord John and the Hand of Devils)
- The Custom of the Army (Book 2.5, included in Seven Stones to Stand or Fall)
- The Scottish Prisoner (Book 3)
- A Plague of Zombies (Book 3.5, included in Seven Stones to Stand or Fall)
- Besieged (Book 3.75, included in Seven Stones to Stand or Fall)
