The Outlander series is an immensely popular historical fiction fantasy romance series by Diana Gabaldon that time travels between 1940s England and 18th century Scotland and America (for the most part).
The books feature the main characters James (Jamie) Fraser and Claire Beauchamp Randall. Jamie is written as a friendly, kind, intelligent, and stubborn man. He has a strong sense of duty and honour and takes his responsibilities to his family and community very seriously. He is a natural leader and devoted to Claire. Claire is written as compassionate, headstrong, and resilient. She’s willing to do hard things to survive and is cool under pressure.
The mixture of time travel, romance, and history is greatly appealing to fans of the Outlander series, who say they get immersed in all the elements of the saga. They fall in love with the characters and become heavily invested in the characters’ lives. Many readers place Diana Gabaldon at the top of their list of favourite authors.
Although each book has a central plot and timeline, the books are a continuing narrative, so it is recommended to read the books in order to follow all the adventures of the main characters and supporting cast as they age and grow throughout the series.
Diana Gabaldon has written a number of short stories related to the Outlander series. She also created a spin-off series featuring Lord John Grey. The volume, Seven Stones to Stand or Fall, collects several short stories featuring characters from Outlander. Many of these short stories are sold separately as well. These stories include:
- Virgins (Book 0.5)
- A Fugitive Green (Book 2.5)
- The Space Between (Book 7.5)
- A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows (Book 8.5)
- The Custom of the Army (Lord John Grey, Book 2.5)
- A Plague of Zombies (Lord John Grey, Book 3.5)
- Besieged (Lord John Grey, Book 3.75)
Notably, Virgins is a prequel to the Outlander series, and Past Prologue, a short story co-written with Steve Berry, features Jamie Fraser. Additionally, Gabaldon has written an Outlander graphic novel (The Exile) and two companion volumes (The Outlandish Companion Volumes One and Two).
