Holland Family Books In Order
The Holland Family series are the most recent additions to James Lee Burke’s Holland family saga which also includes the Billy Bob Holland and Hackberry Holland books. This set of books begins with Weldon Holland as a teenager in the 1930s, then switches to Aaron Holland Broussard, following him through several decades of life in the American West. The genre of the books is difficult to classify but they are a mix of suspense, mystery, and historical fiction.
Wayfaring Stranger (Book 1) tells the story of Weldon Avery Holland, who is a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, and later becomes entangled in the dawn of the American oil industry. James Lee Burke names Wayfaring Stranger as his best novel. He says, “Wayfaring Stranger is my best book. I once told another journalist, ‘I don’t claim that I deserve the Pulitzer Prize, but that book — Wayfaring Stranger — deserves it.’” (Crime-Reads). He also includes The Jealous Kind (Book 2) as one of his top three novels, alongside House of the Rising Son.
A teenaged Aaron is the narrator of The Jealous Kind (Book 2). As an adult, he narrates Another Kind of Eden (Book 3), and as an old man, he narrates Every Cloak Rolled in Blood (Book 4).
It should be noted that Every Cloak Rolled in Blood (Book 4) is considered more of a companion book to Another Kind of Eden (Book 3) rather than a sequel.
