At the end of The Searcher by Tana French, Mart is singing an Irish song with several verses that end with “…why should any man care, when it’s nothing to him?” (p. 433-434).

This song, “Cad é sin don té sin” is the song that is referenced in the passage above. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate a video with an English version of this song.

  1. Thank you! That is lovely. I am a devoted fan of Irish music beginning with the works of Turlough O’Carolan. I am not sure that an English translation of these lyrics would work with the melody and the sound of the Irish language is lovely. I have saved this so I can listen to it while I reread “The Searcher.”

  2. Thanks for sharing that! I, too, love to listen to Irish music. I recognized another song from the book, too. When Cal is at the pub the night he tries the local poteen, there’s a song in the background where the crowd is “roaring out ‘No! Nay! Never!’ and hitting the table.” That song is The Wild Rover— very popular in a lot of places on St. Patrick’s Day, at least around here! I don’t know how to post things other than to provide this link, if you’re interesting in hearing a version of it: https://youtu.be/9iRRvjjHDkw?feature=shared
