While it has taken me some time to learn how this site works ( and I know I haven’t quite figured it all out yet) I feel like this is a much cozier book club. There is still time for those who want to join us to find their way to this location. In my past experiences there are joiners who join groups and clubs to fill a dossier. Then there are those who join to be active members not just dues paying members. To monitor such a huge group as the FB page is exhausting and I am sure painful at times. I plan to participate wherever the discussion is held but this site would be my first choice.
I know this puts a heavy load on you at Book Club Friends and so appreciate all your hard work to keep Louise’s fans together in a meaningful way. I am grateful for all you do.
I am very very uncomfortable with this site. It’s confusing, not at all user friendly, and I’ve been a site user and IT person since heaven knows when. I also feel there is some exclusivity going on. And I do not mean to dismiss the difficulties of administering the Facebook site.
I’ve just spent a full hour trying to figure out this expletive site just to get into it. And what’s with the cat tax?
Hi Adele, thanks for the feedback. We’re happy so see you here and posting both to the Home page feed and to the forums. We agree with you that there is much room for improvement here, and we’ll continue to try our best to make the site more accessible to everyone.
Cat tax is Internet slang, meaning that members are encouraged to share an image of their cat. It’s seen as a duty to be fulfilled upon introduction to a forum or social media platform. Cat tax and all the other types of taxes published are just fun posts that members share to introduce themselves and their experiences with our community.
We’ve put together some guides (and will continue to add more as quickly as possible) on our FAQ page (https://www.bookclubfriends.com/faq/). Please take a look whenever you have a moment to see if there is any information there that might be useful. But also please keep in mind that you can always contact us (https://www.bookclubfriends.com/contact/ or [email protected]) directly with questions or problems and we may be able to get things sorted much more quickly.
So, I reluctantly voted to use the Facebook Group for the discussion of “The Grey Wolf.” I am comfortable with this group and would be delighted to engage in the discussion on this site. I agree that the Facebook group and its administration is a huge demand on the admins and I echo Libby’s gratitude for all that you all do. I don’t know if it is possible to get Facebook group members to agree to limit using the site for the book discussion only; that seems unlikely but I think would it make using Facebook for this book discussion more effective and functional.
I think there are folks who have looked forward to this book discussion and, for one reason or another, will or cannot use Book Club Friends. Maybe some who have joined will comment once the full discussion of “The Grey Wolf” is opened even though they have not posted on anything yet on this site. So, for this discussion, I would endorse returning to the Facebook group. I also believe that pausing or even closing the Louise Penny Facebook Group following this discussion is a reasonable and appropriate plan.
I will also support the view of the majority.
I hope this all makes sense and thank you, admins!
On pausing the FB site only giving the new links is not sufficient. A lot of members are going to feel left out. This site is so confusing
Well…I feel like I’m missing some part of the conversation here. Maybe I missed a past post about votes? To answer the question, I enjoy the high quality of content here and the realness and expertise of this site and the people who post and comment. There is so much to explore here and yes, I would absolutely invite other Gamache fans to visit. The only thing about this site is the need to click to get from place to place, whereas in all the apps now, everything seems to be on one scrollable page with buttons on that page to do most everything you’d like. There are usually different areas on other apps too, to be fair, but usually only a few. This site is packed with interesting things in lots of different areas, so it takes much more time to explore. I find myself looking around for bursts at a time and then when I return, there’s so much to catch up on from just the home page alone that I still haven’t had the time to explore the rest of the site. And obviously even when just focused on home page posts, I miss out on some posts and conversations that have happened since I last visited.
Since I don’t have a Facebook account and cannot post there under my family member’s account, I can only read the other comments from group members. I am content to continue to read only, if the majority wants to hold the discussions on Facebook. I have been limited to only reading the group posts for almost six years now, so I am used to it. But I wouldn’t mind to participate in the discussion here for “The Grey Wolf” also, if other members would like to make a little effort to come here. It seems to be agreed that there has been a great effort for a long period of time from admins to manage the group, so maybe it would help the group to be healthier if there was more equality in the efforts from others, if all members value being in the group. Regardless, and please correct me if I am wrong, it sounds to be that admins are not granting themselves a vote in this poll. But I hope that admins will allow their own voices to contribute to this decision also.
One thing that I don’t think I am wrong about is that there seems to be great concern and respect for one another here, which is wonderful to see. Thank you all.
Mei lan I definitely agree with you that our admins should have a vote about whether we discuss Grey Wolf here on BCF or on FB. And, you are absolutely right that there is great honest concern for others and respect here. That’s why this site feels more like home to me than FB. I would also add that never have I been a part of a FB page that offered so much interaction amongst the group members other than what is offered up on the live feed. There are so many opportunities here to further our love of reading, make new friends, share creative talents, and so on.
I also agree with Mei Lan’s comments. I hope the admins will consider all of the comments in context and not just count up votes. The admins for this site are amazing and the work involved is a tremendous gift to all of us.
I agree that there is much to explore here which I will do more of after the discussion of The Grey Wolf. If I remember correctly from the discussion of Iron Lake on Facebook, there were only a few key people who participated. The other discussions of Louise Penny’s books were not really discussions, but asked for comic moments, wisdom of Gamache, food, etc.
Nancy, Thanks. I enjoy your comments. It seems to me that there is an inherent difference between the discussions of Louise Penny and Three Pines and the other book discussions. I believe all of us found our way here and to the Facebook group through LP. I know I did; I went looking when a friend told me about the Facebook group. I suspect we all have that connection in common. The other book discussions reflect the diversity of our individual interests and reading. I was familiar with the Cork O’Connor series but not the preceding monthly discussion choices. I have, however, been strongly encouraged to add Osman to my list of authors I have read. Thanks to the Facebook group and, especially, Book Club Friends, I have several new authors loaded on my Kindle for the time when the discussion of “The Grey Wolf” has concluded and I am awaiting new releases by the authors I currently know, Hillerman, Krueger and another Louise Penny. I am also looking forward to exploring more here.
Thank you. I also found my way here and on Facebook through LP. In fact, those discussions of LP’s books on Facebook started shortly after I had started rereading the entire series. I also have all of the Cork O’Connor series, but reread Iron Lake in order to participate in that discussion. Most of the time, what I am reading does not match up with any discussion and I don’t necessarily read a book to participate in a discussion. I have the whole series of Charles Finch’s detective series in 19th century London (Charles Lenox) which I am now reading while waiting for the discussion on The Gray Wolf. After Charles Finch, I will be reading the entire series of Laurie King’s Mary Russell and Sherlock. After emerging from those worlds, I will go back to some individual books that I have.
There is an incredible amount of consideration and generosity in this post and comments. I am truly grateful to be a member of this community and to feel warmth from members, which is clearly demonstrated by kind words and thoughtfulness towards others.
I would be curious to see if others members who have joined but not been as active, or if members who have yet to join, would join and be more active in their participation here on BCF once our discussion begins, if the decision is to hold them in the BCF forums. It seems like there is just a little initial hurdle in getting acquainted with this new site, and that once it becomes more familiar, folks may want to join the main feed conversations, in addition to the forum discussion topics.
So I do think it would be worthwhile to host the discussion here, although I am very happy to discuss books with you wonderful people, wherever the majority decides.
Thank you for showing so much respect in asking this question, and thank you all for being such truly lovely people.
My thoughts on this site are that I find it full of interesting things to explore, and hope to continue doing that. Yes, I would continue to use it and recommend it to others. I think the posters here are a great group of thoughtful, considerate people, and that’s refreshing compared to many things I’ve seen on FB over time. And I see that many of my other preferred authors are listed and recommended, so I look forward to checking into the resources here to find my next reads. I do hope that this site can survive and thrive. Many thanks, admins, for all that you do.
Hello Susan! Happy to see you here!
Hi, and thanks! I’m happy to be here. Still trying to figure things out, but little by little, I’m comprehending. Just noticed how to “reply” to specific comments today– duh! So far, I am enjoying the interesting and thoughtful subjects and comments showing up here, and am looking forward to further discussing The Grey Wolf (and hopefully, the Black!)
I replied to others’ comments here so I’ll briefly say I’m not a fan of this site.
